Why do you desire to work at KFAC?
I
have a strong background in agriculture and was in 4-H for
13 years. I recently earned my bachelor's degree from K-State
in Agricultural Communications & Journalism with a minor
in Animal Sciences & Industry. After graduation, I knew
that I wanted to stay within the agriculture industry and
had hoped that I could find a job in which I could apply
my communications skills and also have an opportunity to
learn some new skills, too. I think that anyone who has
ever been a recent graduate at some point has probably discovered
that it can be difficult to find "the perfect job"
right out of college. And I still wasn't even sure what
my idea of that job was. But, when the Program Assistant
position opened up with KFAC I knew that it was the job
for me.

What is your #1 goal while serving the Foundation?
Our
Executive Director, Cathy Musick, and our board members
all have great ideas and plans for the Foundation's future.
Some are already in progress (such as the new Natural Resources
Educators' Guide) and some are still in the idea stage.
My number one goal is to work closely with Cathy and the
board members to help make sure that these ideas and goals
are sought through and developed into something tangible.

Why is it important to educate youth on agriculture?
So
many youth (and even some adults) today do not understand
where their food and clothing comes from. I remember my
Dairy and Poultry Science professor in college telling the
class this story about something that he saw on the news
one evening: He said that a TV news channel had interviewed
several people in a community and asked them about their
feelings on the issue of the local dairy farm being bought
out for housing development. One lady said that it wouldn't
affect her either way because she would just buy her milk
from the grocery store instead. These young people will
someday become leaders and voting members of our society
and if we want them to keep the well-being of agriculture
and farmers in mind when they vote, then we need to make
sure that they understand and appreciate agriculture.

What is your background in agriculture and/or education?
My
family has always been involved with livestock and 4-H,
so when I was growing up, agriculture was also a huge part
of my life as well. My family raises purebred Shorthorn
and Maine Anjou show cattle as well as purebred Duroc, Yorkshire,
Hampshire and Spot show pigs. Every April we host a 4-H
pig sale at our farm in Overbrook, Kan. and participate
in several consignment sales throughout the summer and fall
seasons. Although I am the youngest child in our family
and have long since been too old to compete in 4-H competitions,
my family still remains active in helping other 4-H members
with their projects and continues to compete with our own
livestock in open shows at the State and National levels.
I foresee myself always being involved in the agriculture
industry in some way or another. I believe that it has made
me the person that I am today and if I hadn't grown up around
it, then who knows where I would be today?
